Located in the Cedofeita area, in the city of Porto, the Palácio dos Carrancas is situated on Rua de D. Manuel II. It is integrated into a consolidated urban environment, aligned with the street's profile, close to the rear of Santo António Hospital. Its presence, though imposing, blends into the city's fabric.
The history of this site dates back to the 18th century, when construction began to serve as a residence and factory. Later, the Moraes e Castro family settled here, becoming known by the nickname "Carrancas," which would give the palace its name. Over time, the building hosted important figures, having served as a temporary residence for military and political personalities, including D. Pedro. Its conversion into a museum in the 1930s marked a new phase in its long existence.
The palace is a notable example of neoclassical architecture in the city. It exhibits a clear influence of the English Palladian style, visible in the composition of its main facade. The building is designed in a "U" shape, with three main floors and an attic. Notable elements include the granite base, the elevated noble floor, the prominent central body crowned by a pediment, and the cadence of the first-floor windows, which alternate between curved and triangular pediments. The parapet at the top, decorated with balusters, vases, and urns, lends it a solemn character.
Currently, the palace houses the Soares dos Reis National Museum. The museum's collection has its roots in historical city collections, such as those from extinct convents and the former collection of João Allen, enriched by later donations and acquisitions. The museum exhibits decorative art, including furniture, ceramics, and goldsmithery, as well as painting and sculpture, with a particular focus on works from the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, featuring works by artists such as Henrique Pousão and the sculptor António Soares dos Reis, after whom the museum is named.
