The construction of this remarkable neoclassical building began in 1770, resulting from the visionary project of the acclaimed English architect John Carr. Although its construction spanned several decades, the first patients were admitted to the site from 1795 onwards.

The building stands out for its purity of lines and proportions, exhibiting a characteristic Palladian style with a symmetrical and sober structure. The main façade is one of its most distinctive features, boasting imposing columns that evoke classical temples and an elegant decorative balcony.

National Heritage and Legacy

Recognized for its exceptional value, Santo António Hospital was classified as a National Monument in 1910, establishing itself as one of the most significant examples of 18th-century architecture in Portugal.

Beyond its unquestionable heritage importance, the building symbolizes a center of excellence in training and community service. Its relevance is highlighted by the title of Honorary Member of the Order of Merit, awarded to the hospital in 1986, a testament to its continuous contribution to health and well-being in Portugal. The hospital's League of Friends was also honored with this distinction in 1998, reinforcing the profound social and civic impact associated with this historic institution.
