The Convent of Madre de Deus de Monchique is located in Miragaia, Porto, on a hillside overlooking the Douro River, near the Crystal Palace Gardens and the Customs House.
Built in the 16th century by Pedro da Cunha Coutinho and his wife, this convent belonged to the Order of Poor Clares, a female branch of the Franciscans.
Although in ruins, the church had a single nave and a chancel with ribbed vaulting. The convent stood out for its cloisters, large refectory, and towers with viewpoints.
Most of the convent is in ruins, with some parts adapted for industrial use over the years. Mainly walls and some preserved areas remain.
The church was a notable example of Renaissance architecture, with rich gilded carvings, which were transferred to other churches after the convent was deactivated.
Since the 19th century, the site has been transformed for industrial activities, housing factories for ceramics, furniture, and cork.
It can be visited by passing through Rua de Sobre o Douro and other historical routes in the city.
