The Chafariz das Virtudes (Fountain of Virtues) is located in Miragaia, a historic area of Porto, within the Jardim das Virtudes (Virtues Garden), a green space much sought after by those visiting the city.
It is also known as Fonte do Rio Frio (Cold River Fountain) or Fonte das Virtudes (Fountain of Virtues) due to its connection with the river that supplied the fountain.
This fountain has been classified as a National Monument since 1910, which reinforces its historical and cultural importance.
The construction of the Chafariz das Virtudes dates back to 1619 and was carried out by the inhabitants of the area, with the aim of providing drinking water to the population. At the time, it was supplied by the waters of the Rio Frio (Cold River).
At the end of the 18th century, the fountain ceased to be used for supply and was replaced by the Chafariz da Rua das Taipas, which assumed that function.
The fountain was originally built next to the Postigo das Virtudes, a small gate in the old Fernandine Walls, which protected the city of Porto.
Today, the Chafariz das Virtudes is integrated into a garden that offers a panoramic view over the Douro River, being a pleasant place for walks and relaxation.
