The Casa e Capela do Bom Sucesso (House and Chapel of Good Success) are rare examples of an 18th-century agricultural estate still preserved in Porto, which was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 2011.
The estate was built in the late 18th century by António de Almeida Saraiva, a merchant from the city. The house has a simple and rural style, while the chapel, dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Our Lady of Good Success), features a more elaborate and baroque design.
In the past, the Quinta do Bom Sucesso (Estate of Good Success) was part of a rural area on the outskirts of Porto, when the city was still small. It was common for noble and bourgeois families from the city to use these estates as leisure retreats. The estates were also important for supplying food to the city, such as fruits and vegetables.
Since the mid-18th century, the chapel has gained the devotion of the faithful who came from the city to pray to Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso (Our Lady of Good Success), becoming an important religious point.
With the growth of the city, most of the estate's land was occupied by urbanization. Currently, the areas that were once agricultural have been replaced by streets and buildings, with the house and chapel preserved in the middle of the modern urban space.
The Casa e Capela do Bom Sucesso (House and Chapel of Good Success) have been restored and maintain their original design on the exterior, and are now incorporated into the Shopping Cidade do Porto building. The house functions as a restaurant-bar and the chapel has been reopened for worship, currently being cared for by the Missionaries of the Missionary Fraternity Verbum Dei.
