The Church of Salvador is located in Lufrei, in the municipality of Amarante, in a quiet rural area, about three kilometers from the city.
Built in the 12th century, it is an example of simple and late Romanesque architecture, very common in northern Portugal.
Originally a female monastery, it became a parish church in 1455 after the departure of the Benedictine nuns.
The main portal has a pointed arch and the church is illuminated by small openings, maintaining a sober style, without elaborate decoration.
The main altar is Mannerist and there are old mural paintings hidden under layers of plaster, visible in some parts of the nave.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1971 and is part of the Romanesque Route, a tourist itinerary of the region.
The church is surrounded by agricultural fields and has a churchyard with medieval tomb chests, which increases the historical interest of the place.
