Serralves House is located within Serralves Park, in Lordelo do Ouro, Porto.
The house is located on the former Quinta do Conde de Vizela (Count of Vizela's Estate), inherited by textile industrialist Carlos Alberto Cabral, who commissioned the house's construction in the 1920s.
Serralves House is a rare example of Art Déco architecture in Portugal. The house's design was created by French architect Charles Siclis and adapted by Portuguese architect Marques da Silva.
The gardens were designed in 1932 by landscape architect Jacques Gréber and completed in 1940. They are an impressive green space, with diverse areas, ranging from extensive lawns to more formal gardens.
In 1944, Carlos Alberto Cabral moved into the house, but sold it a decade later to businessman Delfim Ferreira. Until the 1980s, the property was not open to the public.
In 1986, the State acquired the estate and opened it to the city. In the following years, the space became an important cultural hub.
In the late 1980s, the Serralves project grew with the creation of the Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, which was built in an area of the former garden.
In 1996, the entire complex of Serralves House and Park was classified as a property of public interest, due to its architectural and cultural value.
Currently, Serralves House and Park are managed by the Serralves Foundation, which promotes various exhibitions, cultural and artistic events, in addition to maintaining the museum of contemporary art.
