Located in the Vilar area, in the city of Porto, the Casa Tait Gardens are situated on a west-facing urban slope. Their position offers sweeping views of the Douro River and the impressive Arrábida Bridge, providing a picturesque setting for visitors. Despite being within the urban context, they are secluded by walls that create an atmosphere of refuge and serenity.
The design of these gardens is marked by their structure in three distinct levels, extending down the slope. On the highest level, a woodland invites exploration, revealing a romantic and wild atmosphere. On the intermediate level, where Casa Tait is harmoniously integrated, there is a formal garden, though with an asymmetrical design. Finally, the lower level extends into a spacious lawn, dotted with various fruit trees, which harken back to the property's original use.
The Casa Tait Gardens are a true collection of plant diversity. Walking along its paths, one can observe a profusion and exuberance of botanical species, many of them rare and of great value. Some specimens are classified as Forest Species of Public Interest, attesting to the ecological and landscaping relevance of this space, a result of meticulous care for nature.
Originally known as Quinta do Meio, this property was transformed into the Casa Tait Gardens in the 19th century. It was a period of great vigor, driven by the spirit of experimentation and passion for nature of naturalists who shaped the space. Acquired by William C. Tait in the 19th century, the quinta remained in the family until 1978, when it was sold to the Porto City Council, preserving its vocation as a recreational space for the city.
