Situated in the city of Porto, this garden is located on Avenida Brasil, in a privileged position on the coastline connecting Foz to Matosinhos. Its location offers a unique perspective of the coastal line, although urban growth has altered the original setting of the property, giving it a distinct presence in the city's maritime landscape.
The garden is an integral part of a unique property, built between 1910 and 1911. This house, with its romantic and revivalist architectural inspiration, was designed by the architect José Teixeira Lopes, a notable figure of the era, at the request of Artur Jorge Guimarães. The building features a richness of detail that alludes to Manueline architecture, such as varied arches, elements of Mudéjar and late Gothic style, in a truly eclectic manner. From the main porch of the house, covered with blue and white tiles evoking the Portuguese Discoveries, an elegant staircase leads directly to the garden, creating a fluid connection between the interior and this outdoor space, shielded by a gate facing the marginal.
The name "Sundial Garden" gives this space a symbolic dimension linked to the measurement of time through sunlight. Although specific details of the sundial may be observed on site, the name itself suggests an invitation to pause and contemplate. This garden serves as an aesthetic extension of the house that hosts it, inviting reflection on the passage of time in a setting that evokes the history and architectural creativity of the early 20th century, all by the sea, in the city of Porto.
