Situated in the Bonfim area, in the heart of Porto city, the Campo 24 de Agosto Garden presents itself as a triangular green space, offering a serene contrast to the surrounding urban dynamism. Its central location provides a moment of tranquility and pause during a journey through the city.
This garden was created in the early days of the Portuguese Republic, between 1912 and 1914. It stands out for preserving a large part of its original trees, which are living testimonies of its foundation. Although often used as a thoroughfare, the space was designed for rest and contemplation, offering a break from the daily rhythm.
The garden's environment is defined by a selection of tree species that provide shade and beauty throughout the year. Around the space, majestic plane trees contribute to a welcoming atmosphere. In the southern area, the presence of jacaranda trees, originally from Brazil, is noteworthy, whose unique flowering gives a vibrant color to the space at certain times of the year. To the north, a viewpoint was built, taking advantage of the natural slope of the terrain to offer a different perspective on the green space.
A prominent feature in the garden is the sculpture dedicated to António Ribeiro Chiado, a figure linked to the history of culture and Porto. This work of art complements the garden's environment, adding a cultural and historical dimension to the space, allowing for a moment of reflection.
Designed to welcome all visitors, the garden was conceived with particular attention to accessibility. Along its perimeter, there are areas with benches and resting spots; these areas allow everyone to find a place to relax, read, or simply observe the daily life that surrounds it, making it an inclusive space for everyone to enjoy.
