Teófilo Braga Garden is located in the heart of Praça da República, a central and easily accessible area of the city of Porto, nestled within the Trindade/Cedofeita area. Its central position makes it a landmark in this vibrant square.
The space currently occupied by the garden has an interesting history dating back to the 18th century. Initially, this open ground served as an exercise area for the Santo Ovídio military barracks, whose construction was ordered by Queen D. Maria I in 1790. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century, between 1915 and 1916, that this area was transformed into a public garden, offering the city a new space for leisure and social interaction.
This garden is an invitation to pause from the city's pace. It is characterized by its extensive grassy areas, ideal for enjoying a moment of tranquility. The existing trees offer shade and coolness, while some flowerbeds punctuate the space with the color of flowers, contributing to a serene and pleasant atmosphere.
In addition to its natural component, the garden hosts several sculptural works that enrich visitors' strolls. Among the artworks are the statue of "Bacchus", created by António Teixeira Lopes in 1916, the representation of "Padre Américo", by Henrique Moreira and dated 1959, and a more recent sculpture symbolizing the "Republic", a work by Bruno Marques from 2010. These sculptures add a cultural touch to the garden's relaxing atmosphere.
