The Arca de Água Garden is located in the city of Porto, more precisely in the Paranhos area. It is situated in the heart of Praça de 9 de Abril, presenting itself as a remarkable green space integrated into the surrounding urban fabric.
The name of this garden is directly linked to a historical heritage of the city: the old water supply systems. The original "Arca de Água" captured water from springs that existed in this Paranhos area, channeling it to supply many of Porto's public fountains for centuries. This system was crucial for the city's life until the late 19th century. The garden, inaugurated in 1928, was thus named in homage and recognition of this site of great hydraulic importance for Porto.
With an area of approximately 22,000 square meters, the Arca de Água Garden presents itself as a generous and inviting space. Its design includes lawn areas and well-maintained flowerbeds, complemented by a selection of mature trees that provide shade and beauty throughout the year. Noteworthy are the imposing magnolias that embrace the bandstand, creating a particularly beautiful scene during flowering season. Elements such as a small lake with a bridge and an artificial grotto add visual interest and a touch of tranquility. A sculpture by Charters de Almeida, titled "The Family," further enriches the garden's environment since 1972.
This garden also holds memories of a less common episode in Portuguese cultural history. In the area where the garden is located today, or very close to it, on February 6, 1866, a duel took place between two prominent literary figures: Antero de Quental and Ramalho Ortigão. The confrontation, which originated from intellectual and personal disagreements, resulted in a slight injury to Ramalho Ortigão. This event, in itself, adds a curious historical note to the garden's current tranquility.
