The Garden of Virtues is located in the historic heart of the city of Porto. It stands in an elevated position, almost serving as a natural balcony overlooking the Miragaia area and the valley that slopes down towards the Douro River.
This green space is integrated into the area known as Virtudes, a zone that preserves the traditional character of the city center, situated in the vicinity of the area behind the Palace of Justice.
This garden is renowned for the expansive landscape it offers. From here, it's possible to enjoy a panoramic view of the Douro River, spotting the opposite bank with Vila Nova de Gaia and the Alfândega area. The perspective extends along the river's course, providing a scenic backdrop.
It is a popular spot for those wishing to appreciate the city's riverside ambiance from a privileged position, especially at the end of the day, when the light falls upon the landscape.
One of the most distinctive features of the Garden of Virtues is its terraced design. Due to the sharp slope of the terrain, the space is organized into uneven levels that descend the hillside, a solution adapted to the city's steep topography.
The retaining wall that creates these terraces, punctuated by a sequence of blind arches, is a notable architectural element that lends uniqueness to the garden's structure.
As a public green space, the garden invites rest and contact with nature in Porto's urban environment. It features extensive grassy beds, ideal for moments of tranquility, and is bordered by an alignment of mature trees, notably tall plane trees.
In the garden, there is a specimen of Ginkgo Biloba, a large and historic tree, particularly notable for its size and classification.
Inside the garden is the Chafariz das Virtudes, a historic element classified as a national monument. This fountain adds heritage value to the green space.
The land where the Garden of Virtues is located today was, in the past, linked to horticultural activity. The imposing retaining wall that defines the terraces originated in the second half of the 18th century, contributing to the historical significance of the site. The space also includes some sculptural elements and urban furniture, such as granite benches, along its paths.
