The Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square Garden is located in the heart of the Carvalhosa area, integrated into the vast locality of Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau, and Vitória, in the city of Porto. This green space is an integral part of the city's largest square, popularly known as Rotunda da Boavista, serving as an easily identifiable reference point in the urban landscape of the Invicta city.
In the center of this garden, the imposing Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War stands out. This grand obelisk, built of granite and approximately 45 meters high, was erected to commemorate the notable Portuguese resistance during the Napoleonic invasions. At its summit, a representation of a Peninsular lion dominating a Napoleonic eagle symbolizes victory, while at the base, various sculptures depict the soldiers involved in the conflict. Its design was the result of the collaboration between sculptor António Teixeira Lopes and architect Marques da Silva, making it the structural and identifying element of both the garden and the surrounding square.
Dating from the early 20th century, the garden was designed in a circular shape, intended to encompass and enhance the central monument. Since the decision to landscape this space, some years before the establishment of the Republic, there has been an effort to create a significant green area within Porto's urban fabric. Over time, the garden has undergone redevelopment, with the most recent interventions occurring in the late 20th century, which have contributed to its current aesthetic. Although situated in one of the city's busiest areas, the Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square Garden offers an environment of relative tranquility, functioning as a green oasis in the urban setting.
The garden's botanical heritage deserves particular attention, with highlights including various tree species such as sweetgum trees, oaks, lindens, and tulip trees. Of special significance are the centuries-old California fan palms, recognized for their public interest, which contribute to the space's visual identity. In addition to their aesthetic and leisure functions, the garden and square have a long tradition of hosting public events. Historically, they have been venues for fairs, and they continue the tradition of hosting amusement rides during festive occasions, such as São João and Christmas, alternating between a tranquil refuge and a place for community celebration.
