The square received its current name in 1915, in recognition of the commander of the Porto Volunteer Firefighters, who distinguished himself by his courage in fighting the devastating Baquet Theater fire in 1888. In the center of the garden, a bust perpetuates his memory, a work by the Porto sculptor Bento Cândido da Silva.

Previously, the location had several designations, reflecting its evolution over time. Popularly known as "Flour Fair" ("Feira da Farinha") or "Bread Square" ("Praça do Pão"), it highlighted its role as a point of commerce and gathering. It was also Santa Teresa Square, a name that referred to the Discalced Carmelite convent that existed nearby, underlining its historical and religious connection to the city.
