Located in Vilar do Paraíso, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, the Parish Church of São Pedro stands serenely atop a rise. Its position offers an environment of tranquility, slightly set apart from the urban center. To access the temple, visitors can ascend a staircase leading to a spacious and inviting churchyard, paved with granite and adorned with landscaped areas and trees, providing a peaceful place for contemplation.
The history of the Parish Church of Vilar do Paraíso spans several centuries, revealing a fascinating fusion of styles. Although its current appearance is predominantly Baroque, resulting from interventions in the 18th and 19th centuries, the building retains vestiges of an earlier construction. In the chancel, it is still possible to observe imposing Gothic buttresses, which reveal its earlier origin, dating back to the 16th century. The church also has a historical connection with the old Solar dos Camelos (Camelos Manor House), which was once contiguous to its rear area, having been partially demolished for the construction of the cemetery at the end of the 19th century.
The main façade of the church, with its sober lines, is adorned with tiles that lend a distinctive touch. The imposing bell tower, a late 19th-century addition, stands out, displaying a polychrome mosaic panel with the image of Saint Peter, the patron saint of the parish. Inside, the single nave is covered by a depressed vault, while the chancel displays a remarkable ribbed vault, characteristic of its Gothic heritage. The nave walls are enriched with tile wainscoting, including oval panels depicting biblical scenes, attributed to master Joaquim Lopes in the 1930s. The white and gold carved altarpieces in the chancel and the baptismal font, decorated with a tile panel illustrating the Baptism of Christ, complete the artistic ensemble, inviting a careful observation of their details.
