Situated in the heart of Tresouras, in the Arufe area, in the municipality of Baião, the church stands halfway up the hillside. Its churchyard, paved with traditional cobblestones, offers a space of tranquility and setting. The rural and residential surroundings give the place a serene and genuine atmosphere.
The Parish Church of Tresouras, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, reveals a historical journey spanning several centuries. Although its original construction is conjecturally from the 16th century, the temple underwent significant interventions in the following centuries. The 17th century saw the erection of the bell tower, while the 18th century brought the richness of Baroque carving to its altars. In the 19th century, renovations were carried out, including the enlargement of the bell openings and other structural reforms, resulting in the harmonious fusion of styles observed today.
The church facade, built of exposed granite ashlar, features a sober gable crowned by a Latin cross. The main portal, with a round arch, is one of the vestiges of its 16th-century design. Laterally, the two-story bell tower stands out, with its double round-arched bell openings, a characteristic element of 17th-century architecture that underwent adaptations in the 19th century. The pyramidal pinnacles add a distinctive touch to its corners.
Upon entering, visitors are met with an interior marked by the simplicity of the granite walls and the decorative richness of the ceilings. The nave is covered by a false wooden vault, divided into painted coffers. These 18th-century paintings depict a variety of hagiographic themes, including various saints and biblical scenes, with emphasis on the Mysteries of the Rosary, some of which are identified by inscriptions. On the Gospel side, the pulpit, with its granite basin and white and gold carved railing, features elaborate decorative motifs. The triumphal arch preceding the chancel is clad in imposing gilded carving, extending the aesthetic of the lateral altarpieces, typical of the National Baroque. In the chancel, the main altarpiece, also in gilded carving and of the same style, displays remarkable carving quality, with its twisted columns and a semicircular-profile tribune.
The historical and artistic value of the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel was officially recognized with its classification as a Monument of Public Interest in 2015. This status underscores the church's importance as a fundamental element of the region's built heritage, deserving the attention of those visiting Tresouras and the municipality of Baião.
