The Parish Church of Sandim is integrated into the locality that gives it its name. Situated in Sandim, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, this temple serves as a point of reference and gathering for the local community. It is centrally positioned within the dynamics of the parish.
The current church originated in the year 1700. It was built to replace an older temple that existed in another part of the parish, known as Carvalhosa. This date marks an important moment in Sandim's religious and social history, establishing the building that can be visited today.
Viewed from the outside, the church presents a facade that, although sober, possesses undeniable elegance. Its architecture reflects a popular style, often associated with the work of local master stonemasons of the time. It is possible to notice elements that refer to the Baroque period, giving it a unique character within Sandim's urban landscape.
Upon entering, visitors find themselves in a single-nave church, a common design in many parish temples. The interior stands out for its decoration, where relief images dating from the 17th and 18th centuries can be observed. Particularly notable is the altar, from the second half of the 18th century, which displays the Rococo style, distinguished by the absence of gilded carving, giving it a unique character. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Expectation, the patron saint of the parish.
