The Parish Church of Amorim is located in the parish of Amorim, one of the communities of Póvoa de Varzim. The church is situated in an area that combines residential characteristics with elements of a landscape still bearing rural traits, imbuing it with a serene atmosphere and a strong connection to local life. Its presence is a clear landmark in the Amorim area.
Known to many as the "New Church of Amorim", this temple has a particular origin, marking a distinct phase in the parish's history. The construction of the building began in October 1905 and was completed in 1910. This project was the fruit of the benevolence of four brothers from the Amorim family, Manuel João, António João, Francisco João and Joaquim José Gomes de Amorim, who had emigrated to Brazil and contributed significantly to its construction.
The architectural design of the church is by Adães Bermudes, a prominent architect in the Portuguese scene of the early 20th century. Interestingly, despite being completed in 1910, the church remained closed to worship for a decade. This interruption was due to the political context of the time, marked by the establishment of the Republic, an anticlerical environment, and the nationalization of church property. Its official opening to the public and to parish life only occurred on September 5, 1920.
Since its opening, the Parish Church of Amorim has become the epicenter of the religious and community life of the parish. Its existence is a testament to the philanthropy and strong sense of connection to their homeland by emigrants, who contributed to the construction of a space that would serve generations. The church continues to be a central space for the inhabitants of Amorim, reflecting the identity and resilience of this community over time.
