Located in the heart of the locality of Teixeira, in the municipality of Baião, the Parish Church of Saint Peter stands in a slightly elevated position, gently adapting to the terrain. Its churchyard, paved with granite cobblestones and dotted with a few trees, creates a serene space that precedes the main entrance. The church is situated in a quiet urban area, surrounded by residences and with the parish house adjacent, giving it a central presence in the community.
This church, dedicated to Saint Peter, is a testament to the history and faith of Teixeira throughout the centuries. Although the building observed today underwent a significant reconstruction in the 17th century, the presence of a religious temple on this site is much older. Historical documents, such as the Parish Memoirs of 1758, already described it as the main church of the then village, highlighting its relevance. Throughout the 18th century, the temple underwent important reforms, and in the 19th century, its bell tower was remodeled, giving it its current form.
The Church of Saint Peter of Teixeira presents a harmonious fusion of architectural styles, reflecting the interventions that occurred between the 17th and 19th centuries, with a predominance of Baroque aesthetics. The main facade captivates the eye with its false, counter-curved pediment and its openings arranged in three axes, including a rectilinear portal and two oculus windows that provide light to the interior. The bell tower, which rises on the right side, is a distinctive element, culminating in a bulbous spire. The walls, plastered and painted white, contrast with the richness of the granite stonework present in the pilastered quoins, the moldings, and the pinnacles that adorn the building.
Upon crossing the portal, the visitor is enveloped by an environment of great artistic beauty. The ceilings, with false barrel vaults, are enriched by wooden coffers, while the wooden floorboards invite contemplation. The church's interior houses a series of notable carved elements, with special emphasis on the main altarpiece, an expressive example of the Rococo style, which impresses with its convex plan and rich painted and gilded carving, including a central tribune for display. In the side chapels, there are Mannerist gilded carved altarpieces, with painted panels depicting biblical scenes. The pulpits in stonework and carving, with their intricate decorations, and the granite baptismal font are other points of interest that reveal the artistic mastery of the era.
