The Parish Church of Junqueira is located in the heart of the parish of Junqueira, in the municipality of Vila do Conde. Rising in the area known as Sítio da Igreja (Church Site), its presence marks a central and reference point in the local urban landscape. Its tranquil, yet visible, position offers a setting that invites observation and reflection on the heritage of the place.
Dedicated to Saints Simon and Jude Thaddeus, the Parish Church of Junqueira has a history intertwined with the region's medieval past. Although the building seen today was erected from 1687 onwards, its foundation dates back to an ancient 11th-century Benedictine monastery located next door. From 1770, with the extinction of the monastery, the temple assumed an exclusively parochial role, becoming the center of the community's spiritual life.
The complex comprising the church and the former Monastery of São Simão da Junqueira, the latter currently in private hands, is recognized for its heritage value. Since 2014, this complex has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, highlighting the historical and architectural relevance of both buildings and their link to Junqueira's identity.
The Parish Church of Junqueira presents a remarkable architecture, characterized by its Latin cross plan and the imposing main facade. This is flanked by two slender towers, which lend vertical elegance to the complex. In the center, a Mannerist portal invites entry, adorned with two niches housing statues of the patron saints. Above, a large oval window, flanked by smaller openings, allows natural light into the temple's interior.
Inside, the robustness of the stone masonry creates an atmosphere of solidity and serenity. Particularly noteworthy are the rich Joanine carved altarpieces, dating from the 18th century, which demonstrate the mastery of the carvers of the time. The main altar, commissioned around 1754, reveals influences from Lisbon carving of the period, displaying an artistic work of great detail and beauty.
Throughout the 20th century, the Parish Church of Junqueira underwent several interventions aimed at its conservation and enrichment. From 1968, and facing the need for structural and furniture works, important reforms began, ranging from roof renovation to other significant improvements inside and outside the building. The community's commitment and the patronage of local families were crucial for the completion of these works, which included the construction of a mortuary chapel, the acquisition of new pews, and the installation of a clock, reflecting the strong bond of devotion and care that unites the temple to its parishioners.
