The Main Church of Freamunde is located in the Lama area, at the heart of the town of Freamunde, which belongs to the municipality of Paços de Ferreira. Historically, this church is situated on a small elevation, sharing its space with the local cemetery, which lends an atmosphere of serenity and reflection to the urban setting of the city.
The current Main Church of Freamunde, also known as the Church of the Divine Savior, is an architectural work that stands out for its contemporary character, having been inaugurated in 2019. Its modern design represents a break from the traditional lines of religious buildings, presenting a concept that integrates uniquely into the urban landscape and the panorama of Portuguese sacred architecture.
The history of the parish of Freamunde dates back centuries and is intrinsically linked to its patron saint, the Divine Savior. It is believed that the adoption of this patron, who replaced Saint Martin in the 13th century, was influenced by the Crusades movements. Although the building we observe today is recent, it perpetuates a long tradition of faith and community life. The previous church, which stood on this same site, was characterized by a longitudinal plan and details such as a baptismal font sculpted from a single piece of stone, a rectangular chancel, and a bell tower, elements that defined its classical religious architecture.
The uniqueness and quality of the architectural project of the Main Church of Freamunde have earned international recognition. The building was nominated for the Archdaily Building of the Year 2021 award, in the Religious Building category, and was among the ten finalists for the prestigious International Sacred Architecture Prize, awarded by the Italian foundation Frate Sole. These distinctions underscore the importance and innovation of its design in the context of contemporary sacred architecture.
