Church and former Convent of the Carmelites

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Porto > Porto > Porto > Centro Histórico

Location

Situated in the heart of the Historic Centre of Porto, on Rua do Carmo, this remarkable architectural complex marks a distinctive turning point in the urban landscape. Its construction creates a particular curve in the street, integrating itself uniquely into the fabric of the city. The former convent, now occupied by the National Republican Guard, and the church, form an impactful visual unit, recognized as a National Monument.

History and Architecture

The history of the Church and the former Convent of the Discalced Carmelites dates back to the early 17th century. The foundation stone was laid in 1619, and the church was completed around 1628. This construction is an example of the transition between Mannerist and Baroque styles, with well-defined classical elements. The main facade, facing south, features a narthex with three semicircular arches, the central one being larger, separated by pilasters of Doric-Roman inspiration. It is crowned by a triangular pediment featuring the religious Order's coat of arms. Later, in the 18th century, the tower was moved to the west side of the main facade, an element that today is distinguished by its tiled patterned cladding and a pyramidal roof.

The Artistic Richness of the Interior

Upon entering, the visitor is enveloped by the profusion of decorative elements that mark the interior of the church. The Latin cross plan, with a single vaulted nave, accommodates six side chapels, three on each side, which display altarpieces in gilded woodwork in Baroque and Rococo styles. The nave ceiling, vaulted, is punctually enriched with the same woodwork, complemented by paintings on wood above the chapels. In the transept, there are large altarpieces also in woodwork, and in the crossing, a dome decorated with intricate gilded motifs. The sacristy, in particular, impresses with its coffered ceiling, adorned with paintings, and a richly worked cupboard, complemented by floral mural paintings.
