District: Porto > Póvoa de Varzim > Aver-o-Mar > Aver-o-Mar, Amorim e Terroso
Situated in the town of Aver-o-Mar, an integral part of the union of parishes of Aver-o-Mar, Amorim, and Terroso, this temple is located in a serene and distinctive environment. It stands isolated, surrounded by a spacious, carefully landscaped and lawned churchyard, delimited by a wall that invites a moment of tranquility in Póvoa de Varzim.
The building features a Neo-Romanesque style, notable for its imposing tower-facade that stands out in the landscape. This architectural choice, although not from the medieval period, evokes the robustness and grandeur of ancient Romanesque constructions, giving the church a unique character and a strong presence.
Inside, the eye is drawn to the dark carved altarpieces, which are distinguished by the absence of gilding or paintings, presenting an elegant sobriety. The main altarpiece is particularly notable, with the tribune's opening in the form of a perfect arch, adorned with multiple mouldings that evoke the aesthetics of Romanesque churches. The materials, such as the exotic woods used in the altarpieces, lend a distinct touch to the space, demonstrating the quality and uniqueness of its design.
The construction of this church is linked to the generosity of the "Bonitos" family, a family native to Póvoa de Varzim who emigrated to Brazil. Their initiative allowed for the erection of this temple, making it a testament to the connection between the local community and its diaspora, and a landmark of faith and history in the region.
