The Church of São Tiago de Cernadelo is located in the area of Ponte da Amieira, a reference point in the locality of Cernadelo, in the municipality of Lousada. This setting offers visitors a peaceful environment, characteristic of the rural communities of northern Portugal, where religious architecture harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.
The history of the Church of São Tiago de Cernadelo dates back, at least, to the 15th century, a period that shaped its identity. The building was erected by utilizing and integrating elements of an even older religious construction, revealing the layers of time that constitute it. Originally, the church functioned as an independent temple, later becoming an annex to the church of Santa Maria de Alvarenga, a detail that illustrates the evolution of the region's parish structures.
The Church of São Tiago de Cernadelo stands out for its architecture, described in the mid-18th century as a construction of Romanesque taste, marked by simplicity and a welcoming scale, typical of rural temples of the era. Despite adaptations and reforms that occurred over the centuries, the building managed to preserve its original architectural matrix, giving it an authentic character. Inside, the main altar, dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint, is the central point, complemented by collateral altars dedicated to Our Lady and the Infant Jesus, inviting contemplation of its spaces and symbolism.
