The Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage is located in Aguçadoura, a town in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, within the area that also encompasses Navais. Positioned on the northern coast of Portugal, this church is about six kilometres from the city of Póvoa de Varzim. The surrounding area is marked by its proximity to the sea and a characteristic landscape of sand dunes, elements that shape the region's identity.
The construction of this church reflects a long and profound aspiration of the Aguçadoura community. For centuries, local inhabitants faced great difficulties in reaching the main church in Navais, especially during the winter months, due to the distance and the condition of the roads. This desire for a local place of worship dates back to the 18th century, although it was not until the late 19th century, around 1873, that the first chapel was built on the site, a remarkable achievement accomplished after much persistence.
With the demographic growth of Aguçadoura, that chapel soon proved to be insufficient. It was then, starting in the mid-20th century, that the construction of the current temple began. This monumental project, completed in several phases until the early 1960s, was entirely financed and built with the tireless support of the population. Many contributed not only with financial resources but also with their own labour, in a collective effort that demonstrates the community's strong bond with its faith and heritage.
The current Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage stands out for its imposing scale, being recognized as one of the largest religious buildings in northern Portugal and the one with the largest capacity in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim. Its architectural presence is a landmark in the Aguçadoura landscape, testifying to the faith and resilience of its builders.
The devotion to Our Lady of Good Voyage is central to the community. The original image of the patron saint, acquired from a convent and consecrated with this invocation in 1873, symbolizes protection and hope for all who embarked on journeys, an echo of the local history linked to the sea and emigration. The current monumental building, with its imposing facade and bell tower, stands as a testament to the evolution of this devotion and the resilience of the community that built it, replacing the previous chapel, which had become too small for the growing population and its faith.
