The Church of Guifões is located in Largo Padre Joaquim Pereira dos Santos, in the heart of the town of Guifões. Situated in the Regedoura area, in the municipality of Matosinhos, its presence contributes to the square's tranquil atmosphere, offering a vantage point to observe the daily life of the parish.
The record of the Church of Guifões is notable throughout the centuries. As early as the inquiries of 1254, its existence is firmly established, indicating its ownership by the Monastery of Bouças. Dedicated to Saint Martin, a patron saint deeply venerated since the High Middle Ages, the church maintains an intrinsic historical link to the church of Bouças, to which it was an annex.
This relationship is evident in medieval documents, such as a deed from 1243 that mentions the "term of Bouças," involving the Chapter and the Bishop of Porto with Queen Mafalda. The relevance of the Church of Guifões is further highlighted by its inclusion in King Dinis's list of 1320, showing its contribution to the kingdom at the time, specifically to support the war against the Moors.
