The Archaeological Area of Freixo, also known as Tongóbriga, is located in the parish of Freixo, in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses. This historical site is of great importance due to its connection with the Roman and pre-Roman past of the region.
Since 1986, Tongóbriga has been classified as a National Monument, standing out for its archaeological and cultural value.
The name Tongóbriga has Celtic origins, where "tong" means "to swear" and "briga" refers to a fortified village. This city, which dates back to the Gallaecian-Roman period, was located in the territory of the Bracari.
The city of Tongóbriga was first mentioned in the 2nd century by the geographer Ptolemy, being a strategic point due to its proximity to ancient Roman roads that connected important population centers.
Excavations in the area began in 1980 and revealed a city that occupied more than 30 hectares. The discovery of structures such as thermal baths with 1,400 m², a commercial area, and public baths are evidence of the city's importance at the time.
Tourists can observe several structures of great interest, such as the Roman thermal baths, a commercial area, and vestiges of the Castro culture. Among the highlights is the Pedra Formosa, linked to the public baths.
The Association of Friends of Tongóbriga is responsible for promoting and valuing the site, with the aim of creating a dynamic cultural space. This association organizes visits and activities that provide a better understanding of the history and importance of the ancient city.
Visiting Tongóbriga allows a journey to the Roman past of the region, with an immersive experience in one of the most important historical centers in northern Portugal.
