The Church of São Martinho is located in the Truta area, within the parish of Frazão, in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira. It is situated in a valley setting, slightly removed from the main residential centers, which lends it an atmosphere of calm and seclusion. This position underscores its connection to a history of isolation, typical of monastic foundations.
The history of the Church of São Martinho dates back to deep roots, with a medieval foundation linked to the Order of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. According to tradition, its original construction was motivated by a vow after a military victory in the 11th century, and it was consecrated in the mid-12th century. Although it experienced periods of prosperity, the building we observe today is the result of a significant reconstruction initiated in the 17th century, which replaced the medieval structure and gave it its imposing character. Alterations and improvements continued to be made until the end of the 18th century, shaping its appearance.
The exterior of the Church of São Martinho displays a Mannerist style characteristic of the 17th century, marked by its sobriety and proportion. The main facade features a granite portal, surmounted by a triangular pediment, flanked by two pyramidal pinnacles that rise from a rectangular base. Above the portal, a large rectangular window stands out. At the top of the triangular pediment, a niche houses the image of São Martinho, guarded by urn-shaped pinnacles. The church's cornerstones, as well as the frames of the portal and window, are in exposed granite, providing a touch of robustness.
Attached to the north side of the facade, the bell tower rises, with a quadrangular plan. Its friezes, cornerstones, and cornices are also in prominent granite, topped by pinnacles crowned with spheres. On the upper part of the cornerstones, cannon-shaped gargoyles ensured the drainage of water from the pyramidal roof. A small bell gable, possibly from an earlier construction phase, can be observed facing west, above the cornice.
The church's surroundings are enriched by a set of seven chapels, dating from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which constitute the Calvary or Way of the Cross. This devotional path keeps alive a secular religious tradition, offering a glimpse into ancient practices of faith. Both this Calvary and the Church of São Martinho itself are recognized and classified as Property of Public Interest, highlighting their patrimonial value.
Upon entering the church, visitors discover an interior that complements its exterior. In the sacristy, a dark wooden cabinet stands out, adorned with oriental-inspired scenes, dating from the mid-18th century. The main altar, with gilded carving, is an example of the national Baroque style, with details reflecting the Joanine taste. The painted ceiling coffers contribute to the rich and artistic atmosphere of the space, inviting careful observation.
