The Chapel of Calvary is strategically located in the Calvary area, in the village of Frazão, part of the municipality of Paços de Ferreira. Its elevated position, atop a hill, gives it a distinctive character and offers a panorama over the slightly undulating rural surroundings. A small courtyard welcomes visitors outside, providing a serene space before approaching the chapel.
The Chapel of Calvary, built in the 18th century, has a history dating back to the early days of that period. Records from 1726 mention it as "Chapel of Our Lady of Expectation", later adopting the designation of "Good Jesus of Calvary". Around 1758, the Parish Memoirs already referred to it as a hermitage that attracted a considerable flow of people, demonstrating its importance as a place of devotion for the community throughout the centuries.
This chapel features Baroque religious architecture, with a longitudinal plan that includes a porch and a single nave. The main facade, facing north, stands out for its full-arch portal, supported by Doric pilasters, which still reveal Mannerist influences. It is flanked by two circular oculus windows, one of which displays the inscription "Esmolas" (Alms). Its facades are built of granite masonry, with regular courses and Tuscan pilasters at the corners, culminating in pyramidal pinnacles and a cross at the gable apex, typical elements of its time.
Inside, the chapel reveals an environment of simple beauty. The walls, plastered and painted white, are enhanced by a wainscot of monochrome blue stencil tiles, which extends along the nave. Natural light is complemented by two strategically positioned windows. The barrel-vaulted ceiling, made of varnished wood, lends warmth and grandeur to the space. The stone slab floor invites contemplation of the main altarpiece, which rises on a granite platform. This altarpiece, in gilded national Baroque carving, houses a central niche flanked by two corbels, where sacred imagery is found, testifying to the artistic richness of the era.
