This old water intake plant was one of the main sources of water supply for the city of Porto, providing water for about 100 years.
It is located in the parish of Foz do Sousa and Covelo, in the municipality of Gondomar, an area rich in history and culture.
Its construction originated from a royal decree of 1855, which approved the creation of several water intake, transport, and distribution infrastructures. This water was extracted from the Sousa and Ferreira rivers.
Over the years, the plant underwent several improvements, especially in the late 1920s, to address its structural limitations. With the construction of the Lever Pumping Station, the plant was eventually deactivated.
In 2010, it was classified as a Property of Public Interest, standing out as an important testimony to the industrial heritage and the history of water supply in Portugal.
The plant, although deactivated, is a point of interest for visitors seeking to learn about the industrial past of the region and explore the surrounding area, rich in natural landscapes.
