The church is located in Foz Velha, an old and picturesque area of Foz do Douro, near the Jardim do Passeio Alegre (Passeio Alegre Garden).
The church's facade is simple and modest, which means that many tourists and even city dwellers don't notice it. However, it is a true hidden treasure for those who appreciate sacred art.
Built in the 18th century, this church replaced a previous one that was located where the Forte de São João da Foz (Fort of Saint John of Foz) stands today, at the confluence of the Douro River and the sea. The fort had a defensive function to protect the city from maritime invasions.
The interior of the church is impressive, with extraordinary gilded wood carving work, characteristic of the Portuguese Baroque. The highlight is the chancel and the six side chapels, which feature exquisite details.
The gilded wood carving work was carried out by two 18th-century masters, Manuel da Rocha and Manuel da Costa Andrade, whose skill and talent are evident in the intricate details and beauty of the pieces.
Inside, in addition to the carving, you can appreciate several images of saints, which are remarkable examples of Portuguese sacred art.
The church is a testament to the history and cultural and artistic heritage of the region. It is an excellent example of how churches in Portugal preserve not only religiosity but also artistic legacy.
The church offers a tranquil atmosphere, often accompanied by ambient music, which allows you to calmly appreciate the details of the art and architecture.
