The Foz Velha Ensemble is located in Foz do Douro, Porto, in an area between the Douro River and the Atlantic Ocean. This historic neighborhood is one of the oldest and most picturesque areas of the city.
Foz Velha began as a small fishing village in medieval times, characterized by narrow streets and low-rise houses, reflecting the fishing activity that dominated the region.
The area reflects a harmonious contrast between traditional architecture and urban development. The transformation of the neighborhood was gradual, with the integration of new buildings over the centuries, without compromising the identity of the place.
The construction of the Renaissance ensemble in the 16th century, led by D. Miguel da Silva, included the Church of São João Baptista da Foz and the Abacial Palaces, reinforcing the prestige of the area at the time.
In the 19th century, Foz Velha began to attract the Porto elite and aristocratic families, becoming a summer resort destination. This period brought new architectural styles, such as chalets and mansions with elegant gardens, influenced by both the British colony and the French aesthetic.
In addition to its architectural value, Foz Velha stands out for its proximity to the sea and the mouth of the Douro River, offering stunning landscapes and a tranquil atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
One of the main points of interest in Foz Velha is the Passeio Alegre Garden, a romantic-style green space, ideal for walks and relaxation.
Despite the expansions and modernizations over the years, Foz Velha maintains a strong identity and cohesion, with an urban layout that respects the traditional buildings and historical heritage of the area.
The area is classified as a Public Interest Ensemble, which ensures its preservation. Interventions and new constructions must respect the existing architectural and landscape integrity.
