The Cradle of Devotion

The place that is today associated with the devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows has a history that dates back to the 18th century. Before the current veneration, this was the spot where the Lord of the Mount was worshipped, with an ancient hermitage already existing on the site. The significant change in evocation to Our Lady of Sorrows occurred from July 24, 1768. On that date, a group of students and residents obtained authorization to place the image of Our Lady of Sorrows in the hermitage. This crucial moment marked the true "cradle" or origin of the devotion that would come to define this space for the community of Póvoa, driving the remodeling of the old structure.
