The Rua Cham Fountain, also known as Fonte do Cativo, is located within the urban fabric of the city of Porto, in the Batalha area. Situated at the corner of Rua de Cimo de Vila and Rua do Cativo, its strategic location places it in alignment with Rua Chã, giving it visibility and a direct integration into the dynamics of Porto's downtown. As it is situated in the Union of Parishes of Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau and Vitória, this element is an integral part of Porto's Historic Centre, a site classified for its rich heritage.
This fountain exhibits a notable neoclassical style, featuring an imposing backrest-type structure. Its "U" shape is defined by robust pilasters at the ends, which are crowned by carved pinecone-shaped pinnacles. The central body, elevated and prominent, is topped by a salient cornice and a pediment, lending it a classical dignity. The front basin, with a cutout, semi-circular shape, is complemented by two protruding spouts that once poured water onto iron supports, intended for placing containers. A central panel, bearing a barely legible inscription and the date 1852, adds a historical touch and artistic detail to the granite and iron ensemble.
The Rua Cham Fountain boasts a rich history, dating back to the 17th century. Records of its existence and the need for its construction already exist from 1636, when the tender was launched for what would become the new fountain on Rua Chã, in a different initial location. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the fountain underwent various repairs and maintenance, highlighting its continuous importance for supplying water to the population. Its current form is due to a significant reconstruction and relocation to its present site in 1852. Currently, this fountain is recognized not only for its architectural value but also as a remarkable testament to daily life and urban development in Porto, serving as a point of cultural and recreational interest for those visiting the city.
