The Fauna and Flora Fountain is situated in the Bandeirinha urbanisation, integrated into the landscape of the renowned Crystal Palace Gardens, in the city of Porto. Its position offers a tranquil environment and a verdant setting, inviting a moment of pause and observation in the urban heart.
This remarkable piece of public art was designed by the French sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. Its creation is an example of the work of the renowned Val d’Osne foundry, which produced high-quality artistic models. The fountain is based on one of his models featured in the foundry's catalogues, known as «Nymphs at the Fountain», underscoring its provenance and its artistic-historical value.
The fountain is composed of a set of sculptures in cast iron, representing two nymphs. These classical female figures are depicted in the act of pouring water into a large stone basin that supports them. The elegance of the forms and the harmony of the composition give the fountain a scenic character, highlighting the beauty of its location.
Recognized as an integral part of Porto's public art collection, the Fauna and Flora Fountain is noted in municipal records. Its presence contributes to the cultural richness of Bandeirinha and to the enhancement of the city's green spaces, offering visitors a glimpse into Porto's urban history and art.
