The Saint Peter Statue is located in the heart of the Fishing District, in the city of Póvoa de Varzim. It is strategically positioned on Avenida dos Descobrimentos, facing the fishing port. This location allows for a direct connection with the maritime and fishing environment that defines a large part of the local identity, offering an authentic perspective on the life of the fishing community.
This notable sculpture is a tribute to Saint Peter, a figure of great relevance to Póvoa de Varzim, being the patron saint of the city. The statue, authored by Armando Coelho, is cast in bronze and depicts Saint Peter in a symbolic and very regional way: a fisherman in his boat. This representation highlights the deep connection between the saint and the local fishing community, which celebrates its patron saint on June 29th with particular devotion and festivity.
The Saint Peter Statue has not always occupied its current place. Originally, it was exhibited at the City Museum, as part of its cultural collection. However, in 1996, on the eve of Saint Peter's feast, the monument was solemnly transferred to its current location, in front of the fishing port. This change underscored the importance of the saint for the fishermen and for the daily life of Póvoa de Varzim, placing the patron saint's figure in a visible and central location for the community it represents.
