Located in Custóias, in the municipality of Matosinhos, next to the Leça River, in an area that is part of the parish of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões.
This bridge is in an area that, in ancient times, was crossed by a road possibly originating in the Roman period. In the Middle Ages, this road was known as "Estrada Velha" (Old Road) or "Via Veteris" and connected the Douro River to the Ave estuary region, passing through several places, including Santiago de Custóias.
The bridge is an example of medieval construction in Portugal. It has a pointed arch and is made of granite, typical of the period between the 13th and 14th centuries. It is a trestle bridge, a form widely used in the Middle Ages.
It is classified as a Property of Public Interest, an official designation that recognizes its historical and architectural value, according to a 1971 decree.
