The Alferes Wayside Cross (Cruzeiro de Alferes) is located in Avintes, a parish belonging to the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, in the district of Porto. This monument marks a local landmark, standing at the intersection of Rua 5 de Outubro and Rua da Escola Central. Its central position in the urban fabric invites a closer look, naturally integrating into the daily landscape of Avintes.
This wayside cross is a piece of religious architecture, a structure traditionally erected in places of passage or spiritual significance. Dating back to the 18th century, more precisely to 1737, the monument preserves its original purpose of devotion. At the top of its column, one can observe an image of Our Lady of Good Success, which imbues the location with a sense of protection and blessing for those who pass by.
The initial construction of the Alferes Wayside Cross was attributed to Manuel Martins Ferreira, an alferes (ensign) who owned property nearby, giving rise to the name by which the monument is known. Its historical resilience is notable, having been completely rebuilt in 1864. This reconstruction, funded through a public subscription, is a clear testament to the profound bond and collective effort of the Avintes community in preserving and valuing this landmark of their cultural and religious heritage.
