The Community's Memory

The initial construction of the Alferes Wayside Cross was attributed to Manuel Martins Ferreira, an alferes (ensign) who owned property nearby, giving rise to the name by which the monument is known. Its historical resilience is notable, having been completely rebuilt in 1864. This reconstruction, funded through a public subscription, is a clear testament to the profound bond and collective effort of the Avintes community in preserving and valuing this landmark of their cultural and religious heritage.
