The Cine-Teatro Constantino Nery is located on Avenida Serpa Pinto, in Leça da Palmeira, a town within the municipality of Matosinhos. It is situated in an urban environment, surrounded by other buildings and a short distance from the Lota de Matosinhos, positioning it in a vibrant area.
Inaugurated on June 10, 1905, the Cine-Teatro Constantino Nery was built on the initiative of Emílio José Ló Ferreira, the first Viscount of Trevões. At that time, the construction of a performance venue was more than a leisure structure; it was a symbol of progress and "Civilization," reflecting the dynamism and prosperity of a community. Its name is a tribute to Constantino Nery, an important figure and the founder's godfather, highlighting his connections to Brazil.
The facade of the Cine-Teatro Constantino Nery features revivalist architecture characteristic of the early 20th century. An observant visitor will notice the ornate stone elements, such as the rustic pilasters, pediments, medallions, and urns, which give it an imposing and distinctive appearance. After a period of abandonment, the building underwent a thorough requalification intervention. From the original structure, only the facade and volumetry were carefully preserved, while the interior was completely redesigned by the renowned architect Alexandre Alves da Costa. This modern project, completed in 2008, transformed the space into a versatile cultural infrastructure.
Currently, the Cine-Teatro Constantino Nery functions as a multifunctional cultural center for the region. Its main hall, with a capacity for approximately 240 people, is distinguished by the flexibility of its removable seating, allowing the space to be adapted to various types of performances, from theater to cinema and concerts. Visitors will also discover a small multipurpose room, ideal for conferences or exhibitions, and a welcoming foyer that serves as a meeting point. At the top of its 14-meter tower, a light shines, symbolizing this renewed and active cultural point in Matosinhos.
