Central Park is located in the City of Maia, in the urban area of Barreiros. Its position is central to the city's fabric, integrating cohesively into Maia's urban landscape. It is situated in a dynamic area, in harmony with the local surroundings, offering a point of tranquility and leisure in the heart of the city.
The land where Central Park stands today was once a small municipal nursery, known as Horto, dominated by eucalyptus trees and some oaks. Its transformation occurred within the context of Maia's urban requalification, responding to the growing population density and the need for more open spaces in the city. The project, authored by architect Alfredo Ascensão, with the collaboration of Laura Tavares and André Santos, was conceived for a perfect integration into the vision of modernizing Maia's center, coordinated by a broader team. Thus, the park is not just a green area, but a fundamental piece in the local urban design.
With an area of approximately 8000 square meters, Central Park proves to be a diverse green space, divided into distinct zones. In one of the areas, vast lawns predominate, dotted with elegant stone pines and a line of poplars that create a harmonious visual barrier. This section is complemented by lakes with constantly moving water and a small elevation adorned with birches, notably featuring an impressive magnolia soulangeana with its beautiful white flowers. In another aspect, a more dedicated area for children's fun is discovered, with a modern set of original play structures, surrounded by a flat lawn with the presence of poplars, oaks, and olive trees. There is also a third, more secluded zone, where birches, poplars, and bamboos are found, and a lake that hosts fish and water lilies, creating a tranquil environment.
Beyond its natural richness, Central Park integrates elements of art and symbolism. At different points in the park, visitors find benches that invite rest and contemplation of the landscape. A notable presence is the sculpture in homage to mothers, a meaningful piece that harmonizes with the green environment, surrounded by purple-flowering lantana montevidensis plants. The park's walls and fences also serve as a canvas for various works of street art, resulting from the Maia Art Biennial, which offer a cultural and contemporary touch to the space.
