The Monastery of São Pedro de Cete is located in the parish of Cete, municipality of Paredes, integrating the well-known Romanesque Route of the Sousa Valley.
A National Monument since 1910, it is a place of great historical and architectural importance.
The foundation of the monastery dates back to the 9th century or, according to some records, to the end of the 10th century (985). Originally, it was a basilica dedicated to Saint Peter and inhabited by Benedictine monks.
The monastery was rebuilt at the end of the 11th century by order of Gonçalo Oveques. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it underwent major changes, such as the expansion of the nave and the remodeling of the chancel and the facade.
In the 15th century, a single-story cloister and a square tower were added, which can still be visited today.
The monastery combines late Romanesque style with Gothic. The church has a single nave with a wooden ceiling and a chancel that ends in a quarter sphere.
