The barracks were built in the late 18th century, in 1790, as part of a set of military buildings with the aim of defending the city of Porto. It remained in operation until the Implementation of the Republic in 1910.
The building reflects the military engineering techniques of the time, with a design intended to accommodate and protect troops. Its robust and functional structure exemplifies Portuguese military architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Initially, the barracks served as a base for military units. Over the years, its use has changed, always in response to the needs of the city and its population.
Located in Cedofeita, a historic neighborhood of Porto, the barracks had a strategic position, controlling important areas of the city. This location was part of a wider military defense network that involved several buildings scattered around the city.
The Santo Ovídio Barracks, over time, maintained a constant interaction with the local population. This relationship with the inhabitants, while serving military purposes, helped shape the identity of the neighborhood and create collective memories.
