Located on Rua Infanta D. Maria, in the Cedofeita area of Porto.
The school was created in 1914 as the Female Section of the Porto High Schools, responding to the City Council's request for a high school for girls. The name was changed to Sampaio Bruno Central Female High School in 1918 and later honored Carolina Michaëlis in 1926.
The school has a significant legacy in female education in Portugal, especially during a period when education was predominantly male. From 1926, it became exclusively female, reflecting a new phase in the history of education.
The first classes took place in a building on Rua de Cedofeita, but the conditions were precarious. In 1921, the school moved to a former English college. The current building, designed by Manuel Fernandes de Sá, was inaugurated in 1951, after construction began in 1937.
In 2007, the school underwent modernization, maintaining its relevance in education.
Although it is an educational institution, the exterior of the building is an attraction for visitors interested in architecture and the history of education in Portugal.
