The Vilar House-Museum is located in the Boavista area, in Vilar do Torno e Alentém, in the municipality of Lousada. Situated on a tranquil plot, it is surrounded by trees and small gardens, offering a peaceful environment just a few minutes from the parish center.
The surroundings combine gentle urban features with patches of vegetation, creating a serene setting for visitors arriving at this old residence adapted into an exhibition space.
This museum was born from the desire to preserve and share the history of moving images, especially in the field of animation. The three exhibition rooms are divided as follows: the first addresses the mechanisms of pre-cinema, with models of the camera obscura and devices that gave rise to film; the second is dedicated to the work of Abi Feijó and Regina Pessoa, two prominent figures in Portuguese animation; the last room gathers animated films from various parts of the world, illustrating diverse techniques and styles.
In addition to screens and projections, there is a small library with specialized publications and a multipurpose room, where lectures and workshops related to these visual arts take place.
The visit is informal, prioritizing direct contact with the materials: it is possible to handle replicas of instruments and understand the functioning of each mechanism. The space retains the original architecture of the house, with walls in light tones and wooden ceilings, which lends a welcoming atmosphere.
The explanation is provided by guides with technical knowledge and interesting facts about animation processes, offering close contact with creators who use the timelessness of images to tell stories. This interactivity helps to understand the journey from the first optical experiments to contemporary techniques.
