Bugio's House and Moorishman's House

Category: Civil Architecture > Museum

District: Porto > Valongo > Campo

Location

The Casa do Bugio e do Mourisqueiro is located in the Campelo area, a point within the locality of Campo, in the municipality of Valongo. Situated in an environment that reflects the daily life of an active community, the building is conveniently positioned to be a meeting point and reference in the area.

A Building with Deep Roots

This building represents the fulfillment of a long-held desire of the Sobrado community. Its construction began in June 1997, driven by a local association with the clear purpose of materializing this space. The land for this purpose was donated by a family from the region, and the project received support from the Valongo City Council. The work progressed through funds raised and donations from the population, resulting in a space that reflects collective dedication. In 2001, the house hosted for the first time the traditional "jintar" of the Bugiada and Mouriscada, becoming, from then on, the stage for various events related to the Saint John's festival. In 2022, the building was officially named "Casa do Bugio e do Mourisqueiro".

The Heart of the Saint John's Festival

The Casa do Bugio e do Mourisqueiro plays a central role in the celebration of Saint John's in Sobrado, being the place where tradition comes to life. It is here that preparatory rehearsals are held and where one of the most striking moments of the festival takes place: the "jintar" of the Bugios and Mourisqueiros. The Salão dos Bugios, in particular, has the capacity to host hundreds of participants and visitors during this event, highlighting its importance as the epicenter of the festivities. The house offers the necessary conditions for the realization of these annual events, ensuring the continuity and grandeur of the celebration.

Safeguarding Memory and Tradition

This space is not only a meeting place but also a guardian of the cultural heritage of the Bugiada and Mouriscada. It features areas dedicated to preserving the costumes and accessories that bring these characters to life. The Sala da Bugiada, created in 2023, and the Sala da Mouriscada, which dates back to 2018, are examples of spaces where the collection related to these traditions is kept. Additionally, the Sala da Direção e do Arquivo, established in 2021, serves as a repository for a vast bibliographic, artistic, and photographic collection, preserving the history of the festival for future generations. There is also a Galeria Museológica, an access corridor to the rooms that is under development to become an exhibition space, further enriching the visitor's experience.

A Space for the Community

In addition to being the main stage for Saint John's events, the Casa do Bugio e do Mourisqueiro is a versatile space that hosts other activities throughout the year. The Salão dos Bugios hosts fundraising events, such as the "Sarrabulhada", and galas honoring the festival participants. The Salão dos Mourisqueiros, being the second largest room, is also used for smaller meetings and gatherings. This adaptability reinforces the house's role as a point of reference for the community, contributing to its vitality and unity.
