The Casa da Cultura de Paredes, also known as Palacete da Granja, is located in the centre of Paredes city, in the urban area known as Madalena. Its central position gives it a prominent role in the local urban fabric, being easily identifiable by its distinctive architecture and the landscaped area that surrounds it.
This building, constructed in the 19th century, boasts a rich and multifaceted history. Originally known as Palacete da Granja, it was commissioned by Joaquim Bernardo Mendes, a prominent figure who returned from Brazil and received the title of Viscount of Paredes. The palace, like other "Brazilian houses" of the time, reflects the grandeur and romanticism of the period, serving as a testament to the prosperity achieved by Portuguese individuals who made their fortunes overseas. It was in this palace, for example, that King D. Carlos was received in June 1895.
Over the years, the palace served various purposes, including that of the Town Hall in the mid-20th century and, later, an educational institution. After a period of abandonment and degradation, it underwent a careful restoration by the Municipality of Paredes, reopening its doors as Casa da Cultura on May 17, 1997. Its restoration had the primary objective of preserving the original architectural features that characterize it.
The Casa da Cultura de Paredes stands out for its unique architecture, which incorporates evident influences from Brazilian constructions of the time. Its facades covered with yellow tiles are a particularly striking and rare element, giving the building a unique identity. The large doors and windows, as well as the gates and the use of granite, are other details that accentuate the imposing and romantic style of the construction. These elements were carefully safeguarded during the restoration process, maintaining the authenticity of the palace.
Currently, the Casa da Cultura de Paredes asserts itself as a vibrant multidisciplinary cultural space, playing a crucial role in the cultural dynamism of the municipality. It is a regular venue for various cultural and recreational activities, promoted by both the Municipality and other entities. This place is a meeting point for those seeking exhibitions, shows, and events that enrich Paredes' artistic and social panorama, offering a diverse programme for its visitors.
The building is surrounded by an extensive garden that complements its architectural beauty. This green space invites a peaceful stroll and offers a relaxing environment. The garden can also host sculptures and, at certain times of the year, serve as a setting for outdoor shows and other cultural initiatives, adding a scenic dimension to a visit to the Casa da Cultura.
