Casa da Botica Velha is located in an area of historical significance in Meixomil, in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira, in the area known as Marco. It is situated alongside a stretch of the old National Road 209, which corresponds to the historic Porto Road. This route, which once connected Porto to Lousada, is an important regional link axis, giving the site a perspective of passage and connection. The proximity of a landmark such as the Joanina Bridge, a short distance away, reinforces its position in a landscape of old routes and historic bridges.
The history of Casa da Botica Velha dates back to the 16th century, with its origins linked to "Casal da Figueira", a property under the purview of the Monastery of São Miguel de Vilarinho. The building observed today in its oldest form dates from 1701, a testament to the rural architecture of the time. Its name, "Botica" (Apothecary), derives from the fact that a community pharmacy operated there for part of the 18th century, an unusual characteristic that deeply marked its identity. On the other hand, its position near a significant bridge also led to it being known as "Casa da Ponte" (House of the Bridge), reflecting its importance in the local road network of other times.
One of the most distinctive and visually striking elements of Casa da Botica Velha is its blazoned portico, built in the first half of the 19th century in Baroque style. This structure, entirely constructed of granite, features a symmetrical design, with four main pilasters supporting a segmental arch. Above the arch, a broken pediment frames an imposing coat of arms, placed over the keystone. This ecclesiastical coat of arms is adorned with symbols such as a hat and tassels, and displays elements representing several families. At the top of the portico, a central cross and decorative urns crown the interior columns, highlighting its artistic and symbolic richness.
Over the centuries, Casa da Botica Velha underwent various phases of transformation, from its original function as a long-term leased agricultural property, through its use as a pharmacy, to a period when it was dedicated solely to cultivation. Its past management included an ingenious irrigation system, with water springs and an aqueduct, known as "cales", which supplied the property's lands. At the end of the 20th century, when it was in an advanced state of ruin, the building underwent a careful recovery program between 1971 and 1982. This intervention was crucial for the preservation of its sturdy stone walls, ensuring its survival and allowing its historical and architectural legacy to reach us today.
