The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, also known as the Chapel of Our Lady of Light, is located in the heart of Valongo. It is situated in Machado dos Santos Square, in a central area of the town, known as Lugar da Luz. Its position offers a tranquil and accessible landmark within Valongo's urban fabric.
This religious building is a landmark with a profound history dating back to 1580. Since the early 17th century, more precisely since 1610, the chapel was already listed in the records of the Bishops of Porto, which underscores its relevance throughout the centuries. It is a testament to the urban and religious changes that shaped Valongo, preserving the memory of generations.
The chapel displays an architecture of simple lines, yet with a discreet elegance. Its facade, covered with greenish-toned tiles, stands out in the surrounding environment. The main access is via two steps leading to a portal, above which a window opens. Inside, the nave features a choir loft and a pulpit on the left side, complemented by two collateral altars. The chancel is highlighted by a wooden altarpiece, painted white and gold, where various images of religious figures are found.
More than a place of worship, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows serves as a cultural and faith center for the community of Valongo. It plays an active role in various local celebrations, being one of the focal points of the annual procession in honor of Saint Mammes, which takes place on August 17th. This place serves not only as a space for prayer and reflection but also as a stage for important religious and cultural events that bring together residents and visitors.
