Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Porto > Matosinhos > Senhora da Hora > Senhora da Penha

Location

The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Hora is situated in the area of Senhora da Penha, which is part of the locality of Senhora da Hora, in the municipality of Matosinhos. Integrated into a predominantly urban environment, the chapel is accessibly positioned, representing a cultural and historical landmark in this more densely populated area of the region.

Its Historical Origins

The history of this chapel dates back to the beginning of the 16th century, with its construction having started in 1514. The promoter and first administrator of this temple was Aleixo Fernandes, who dedicated about thirty years to its initial management. It is also interesting to note that, over time, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Hora gained an alternative popular designation, being also known as the Church of the Seven Spouts.

A Journey of Faith and Transformation

Throughout its existence, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Hora played a central role in local religious life. Between 1918 and 1963, the temple assumed the important function of mother church, serving as the main center of worship for the community of Senhora da Hora. A significant architectural detail is the construction of its bell tower, whose erection was commissioned in 1911. More recently, starting in 1998, the chapel underwent recovery and restoration work, ensuring the preservation of this heritage for future generations.
